HGV licence requirements: Understanding what an HGV licence allows you to do

A HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) licence allows you to drive large commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes for work.

In the UK, licensing and testing is regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) with different licence categories depending on the vehicles you want to drive and the work you plan to do.

HGV licence categories explained

The necessary HGV licence requirements will depend on the type of licence are looking to get, and the type of transport training course you’ll need to do: 

Category C1
This licence allows you to drive vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, mainly used for smaller delivery vehicles or specialist roles, trailers are limited to 750kg.

Category C (Class 2)
Category C allows you to drive rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with no trailer.

This is one of the most popular entry points into the industry and is widely used across construction, logistics and distribution.

Category C+E (Class 1)
Category C+E covers heavy articulated vehicles with trailers, this is the highest HGV licence available and opens the door to long-distance, specialist and higher-earning roles.

Who can start HGV training?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need previous experience to begin - you don’t, and having experience is not a HGV licence requirement to get started! 

To start HGV training, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Hold a full UK car licence
  • Meet the required medical standards
  • Apply for a provisional HGV licence

Many drivers start with no background in transport at all - training is designed to build skills and confidence from day one.

The HGV medical (D4)

Another HGV licence requirement is that drivers must complete a medical assessment to ensure they’re fit to drive safely.

This includes:

  • Eyesight checks
  • Blood pressure
  • A general health review

The results are recorded on a D4 medical form, which is submitted as part of your licence application.

Applying for your provisional HGV licence

Before you can take any tests or begin training, a HGV licence requirement is to get a provisional licence, this involves:

  • Completing a D2 application form
  • Submitting your D4 medical form

Once approved you can begin your training with a qualified instructor and start working towards your tests.

HGV theory tests: building knowledge and awareness

Before moving on to driving you’ll need to pass two theory tests:

  • Multiple choice - covering road rules, safety and vehicle knowledge
  • Hazard perception - identifying potential hazards on the road

Both must be passed as a HGV licence requirement before booking your practical exams.

Practical tests: Modules 3 and 4

Module 3 - practical driving test

This assesses your ability to drive safely and professionally and includes:

  • On-road driving
  • Reversing exercise
  • Vehicle safety questions

Module 4 - CPC practical demonstration

If you plan to drive professionally, module 4 is an essential HGV licence requirement. You’ll demonstrate:

  • Vehicle safety and walkaround checks
  • Load security
  • Preventing criminal activity
  • Emergency procedures

Driver CPC: what you need to know

If you’re driving an HGV as part of your job, you must hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

This includes:

  • Initial CPC (modules 2 and 4)
  • 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years

CPC keeps drivers compliant and safe throughout their career.

How long does it take to qualify?
