Public transport plays a vital role in keeping communities moving, and with continued demand for qualified bus and coach drivers across the UK, more people are asking the same question - can you become a bus driver with no experience? The short answer is yes.

We speak to people every day who assume you need years of driving or transport experience to get started. In reality, becoming a bus driver is a structured and supported process when it’s explained clearly and you choose the right training route.

This guide explains what’s required, what to expect and how you can move into bus driving with confidence - even if you’re starting from scratch.

How to become a bus driver with no experience

To drive a bus or coach professionally without prior experience, you’ll need a PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence.

In the UK, licensing and testing is regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) with different licence categories depending on the size of vehicle and number of passengers, choosing the right licence is about matching your career goals with the correct training pathway.

PCV licence categories explained

Whilst you can become a bus driver with no experience, of course you’ll need a licence before you can actually drive one! Here are the different options you have:

Category D1
Category D1 allows you to drive minibuses with 9-16 passenger seats, often used for schools and community transport, and trailers are limited in size and weight.

Category D
Category D allows you to drive buses and coaches with more than 16 passenger seats.

This is the main licence required for professional bus and coach driving and is used across local bus services, private hire and long distance travel.

Who can start bus driver training?

Anyone can become a bus driver with no experience, as long as you:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Hold a full UK car licence
  • Meet the required medical standards
  • Apply for a provisional PCV licence

Many successful bus drivers start with no experience at all and transport training is designed to build skills and confidence from day one.

The PCV medical (D4)

All PCV drivers must complete a medical assessment to ensure they’re fit to drive safely and responsibly while carrying passengers.

This includes:

  • Eyesight checks
  • Blood pressure
  • A general health review

The results are recorded on a D4 medical form, which is submitted as part of your licence application.

Applying for your provisional PCV licence

Before you can take any tests or begin training, you’ll need a provisional PCV licence.

This involves:

  • Completing a D2 application form
  • Submitting your D4 medical form

Once approved you can begin training with a qualified instructor and start preparing for your tests.

PCV theory tests: building knowledge and awareness

Before moving on to practical driving, you’ll need to pass two theory tests:

  • Multiple choice - covering road rules, passenger safety and vehicle knowledge
  • Hazard perception - identifying developing hazards

Both tests must be passed before booking your practical exams.

Practical tests: Modules 3 and 4

Module 3 - practical driving test

This assesses your ability to drive a bus or coach safely and professionally and includes:

  • On-road driving
  • Reversing exercise
  • Vehicle safety questions

Module 4 - CPC practical demonstration

If you plan to drive professionally module 4 is essential, you’ll demonstrate:

  • Passenger safety and comfort
  • Vehicle safety and walkaround checks
  • Emergency procedures
  • Dealing with incidents and security risks

Driver CPC: what you need to know

If you’re driving a bus or coach as part of your job, you must hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

This includes:

  • Initial CPC (Modules 2 and 4)
  • 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years

CPC ensures drivers remain compliant, safe and professional throughout their career.

How long does it take to qualify?

Most learners can complete their bus driver training in a matter of weeks, depending on:

  • Licence category
  • Training intensity

  • Ability and confidence

With fast-track options available, many people are surprised by how quickly they can be qualified.
