Which HGV training course is right for me?
The right HGV licence training course for you depends on your goals. If you currently hold a UK car driving licence and are wanting to start a new career, then the Car to Category C training course will be a good fit for you. You’ll leave this course with a Category C Licence, allowing you to drive large, rigid vehicles over 3,500kg and up to 32 tonnes.
We also have Lifft Core, which is a Car to Cat C training course that also includes your starter pack (Medical, Theory, Online e-learning, and a classroom day) and initial CPC, which are mandatory to pass your HGV training course.
If you’re looking to drive an articulated lorry with a trailer, then you’ll need to complete a Car to Category C+E training course. If you need your medical, theory and initial CPC, we’d recommend choosing. These have now changed to Lifft Essential, Professional or Ultimate.
Finally, if you’re already a qualified lorry driver looking to upskill your licence, our Category D or C to Category C+E course, or our ADR licence training course would be well suited to you.

What happens if I fail my lorry driver course?
If you fail your HGV training course, you can rebook your test directly with us. We also offer our “Guaranteed Pass System” with our Lifft Ultimate bundle, to protect you against the worry of additional fees at any stage of the course!

Where are the training centres for the HGV course?
We have HGV training centres all across England, including Boston, Flint, Sutton In Ashfield, Hereford, Willenhall and Preston, so you’ll never be far away. With some of our lorry driver courses, if you need to travel more than 70 miles to your closest test centre, we provide accommodation for you whilst you’re training.
Are there any prerequisites to starting lorry driver training?
To begin our courses, you will need:
- To be over 18
- Have a UK car driving licence
- Ensure your photo card licence is in date (new photo required every 10 years)
You also need to complete the following (you can access all through our Starter Pack):
- Medical test
- Multiple choice and hazard perception tests passed
- Provisional entitlement added to your licence

How much does it cost to train to be a HGV driver?
The cost of completing lorry driver training starts from just £1,725, depending on the specific course you’re looking at. You can book your course by just paying the deposit, with the full balance required 14 days before you begin your course. We also offer payment plans to break down the cost into manageable chunks. Our taster sessions for £49 are a great option to try your hand at driving HGVs without commitment to a full course.
Which HGV licence pays the most?
Generally HGV Category C+E licence pays the most, as this allows you to operate articulated vehicles which can command a higher salary. If you train with a specialism, for example transporting dangerous goods with an ADR licence, you can earn even higher salaries.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes, we offer payment plans with our HGV training courses through Klarna. With this, you can pay in full, or choose to pay in 3 or 4 installments. You can also choose to just pay the deposit and settle the full balance 14 days before your course begins, or delay the payment for 30 days.
