How It Works

Step 1

A medical will be booked on your behalf by our team. You will receive your licence upgrade pack when you come in (or we can help you order this online), including the paperwork that needs to be completed.

Step 2

Theory Revision

While you’re waiting for your licence to be approved by the DVLA, we’ll provide you with both face to face and online revision to help prepare for your theory tests.

Step 3

Theory Test

Once your licence has been returned, you can contact us to book your theory tests. This includes both the multiple choice, hazard perception, and CPC where required, with our team on hand if you need any support.

Step 4

Practical

Our team can now book all practical HGV training, test dates and any other relevant CPC training needed. We can offer convenient training locations across the UK.

Why Choose Category D1 Licence Training?

A D1 licence turns a standard car licence into a stable, people facing role behind the wheel of a minibus. Here is why drivers choose it:

A People First Role

Driving a minibus is about looking after passengers as much as driving. If you enjoy contact with people, it is a rewarding way to work.

Work Close to Home

Minibus work is usually local and built around regular routes and runs.

No Full Bus Licence Needed

D1 covers minibuses up to 16 passengers without the cost and commitment of a full Category D.

Valued Across Many Sectors

Schools, charities, hotels, care providers and clubs all need qualified minibus drivers.

What Can You Drive With a Category D1 Licence?

This is the minibus licence. It lets you drive vehicles carrying up to 16 passengers, the kind used by care homes, schools, hotels, sports clubs, charities and community transport. The work is people facing and usually local, with regular routes and dependable hours, and it gets you into passenger driving without the cost of a full Category D bus licence.

A Category D1 licence covers minibuses with 9 to 16 passenger seats, up to 8 metres long, plus a trailer up to 750kg. You can train from age 18, as long as you hold a full car licence. If you plan to drive for hire or reward, a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) will also apply.

Is there a demand for LGV, HGV, or PCV drivers?

+

Yes, there is consistently high demand for goods and passenger vehicle licence drivers in the UK. The demand has steadily grown with a shortage of articulated lorry and rigid truck drivers, meaning there is a gap in the industry to explore a long-term career. Opportunities within the travel industry are also opening up with a steady stream of new positions for minibus, bus, and coach drivers becoming available.

Many companies also provide opportunities for overtime and night allowances, allowing you to tailor your career to your specific needs.

Do you offer payment plans?

+

Yes, we offer payment plans with all of our training courses, including our Cat D1 licence training. You can pay in instalments directly with us or choose longer-term finance options. You can train now and pay later, breaking down the cost of a new career into manageable payments. To learn more, explore our accessible payment options.
