Driver CPC is a legal requirement for most professional drivers in the UK, and understanding how it works is an important step if you’re considering a career in transport.

This guide explains what Driver CPC is, who needs it, and how to achieve and maintain it.

What is Driver CPC?

Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.

It’s a qualification designed to ensure that professional drivers have the skills, knowledge and safety awareness needed to drive large vehicles safely and responsibly.

If you’re earning money from driving or using your licence for work, you are required to have your Driver CPC.

Who needs Driver CPC?

You’ll need Driver CPC if you drive professionally with any of the following licences:

  • Category C (Class 2 / rigid vehicles)
  • Category C+E (Class 1 / articulated vehicles)
  • Category D (bus or coach)
  • Category D1 (minibus)

What are the two types of Driver CPC?

Driver CPC is split into two parts, depending on where you are in your driving journey.

Initial Driver CPC

This is for new drivers entering the industry, to complete your Initial CPC, you’ll need to pass:

  • Module 2 - Case study theory test
  • Module 4 - Practical demonstration test

Both of these modules are completed alongside your licence training and allow you to start working as a professional driver.

Periodic Driver CPC

Once qualified, you’ll need to refresh your CPC every five years, this is made up of 35 hours of training which is usually completed in five, 7-hour sessions.

You do not need to re-take your tests during your periodic CPC training, the main purpose for it is to keep your knowledge up to date.

What does Driver CPC training include?

Driver CPC training is designed to not just help your theoretical knowledge, but to help improve your practical skills too.

Topics typically include:

  • Road safety and hazard awareness
  • Driver hours and tachograph rules
  • Vehicle checks and maintenance
  • Load security
  • Fuel-efficient driving
  • Health and safety

This helps you stay compliant, confident and prepared for a variety of driving situations.

How long does Driver CPC last?

Driver CPC is valid for 5 years.

To remain qualified, you must complete your 35 hours of periodic training before your deadline.

If your CPC expires, you won’t be able to drive professionally until it’s renewed.

Can you drive without Driver CPC?

In most cases, no - driving professionally without a valid CPC can result in:

  • Fines
  • Penalties
  • Issues with employment

There are some exemptions, but for most drivers working in the industry, having your CPC is a requirement.

How do you get Driver CPC?

If you’re starting from the beginning, the process is straightforward:

  1. Start with your provisional licence
  2. Pass your theory tests
  3. Complete your practical driving test
  4. Pass Module 2 and Module 4 (Initial CPC)

Once you have completed the above steps, you will then be required to take your Periodic CPC every five years to maintain your initial qualification.

Why is Driver CPC important?

Driver CPC plays a key role in maintaining standards across the transport industry.

It helps to:

  • Improve road safety
  • Build driver confidence
  • Keep knowledge up to date
  • Support long-term career progression

For employers, it shows you’re qualified and compliant. For drivers, it helps you stay compliant and ready for work.
